Cocker Spaniel History
The Cocker Spaniel has been bred in Great Britain for centuries. The American Cocker Spaniel evolved in the United States from spaniels imported from Great Britain. By the 1930s the American variety had evolved slightly in type, size, and colouring from the English Cocker Spaniel so it was given separate breed status. In the United States the American Cocker Spaniel is registered under the name 'Cocker Spaniel', as is the English Cocker Spaniel in the UK, which can cause confusion between these two breeds. They are named 'Cockers' because one of their original uses was 'cocking' (woodcock hunting). Originally a gun dog, the Cocker is now commonly used as a family pet. Spaniel type dogs have been found in art and literature for almost 500 years. The word Spaniel means 'Dog of Spain' as they originated in Spain.
